The mother of a 6-year-old Florida girl is currently in jail because she used boiling water to punish her child. Yadzia Morales, 32, remained at the Osceola County Jail on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated child abuse and child neglect with great bodily harm. The judge who was overseeing the case was so appalled by the mother’s actions that although Morales’ attorney requested it, the judge refused to set bail.
The mother’s boyfriend is also accused of being involved in the crime. Roberto Lopez, 20, was able to post his $8,000 bail in order to be released on Friday. Like the child’s mother, he is facing the same charges.
The 6-year-old was burned with boiling water. Reportedly, the parents used the boiling water as a form of punishment for the young girl’s behavior. Police reports indicate that the couple’s actions led to second-degree burns on the child’s back, shoulder, scalp and face.
On Tuesday, the mother and her boyfriend reportedly heated up an unspecified amount of water in a microwave and poured it over the young girl’s face and upper torso. Making matters worse, the young girl’s suffering was prolonged because the parents did not seek immediate medical attention or notify authorities.
Instead, it was not until the next evening, while the boyfriend’s mother was watching the young girl that she noticed the child’s injuries. She then called the police.
The 6-year-old girl received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital that was equipped to handle juvenile burns. A police investigation led to the subsequent arrest of both Lopez and Morales.
Thankfully, after almost a week of attentive medical treatment, the little girl was released from the hospital on Saturday. She is currently staying with another relative and is under the supervision of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
