Dr. Boyce: Let’s Face it, Essence Magazine Has Lost it’s “Essence”

wowo

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

The revelations by former Essence Magazine editor Constance White both intrigued and concerned me.  Not to say that I was surprised, but I admittedly long for the days when my friend Susan Taylor stood at the helm of the magazine, and Essence represented something black, extraordinary and authentic.  There was a time when we fully understood that the power of media wasn’t just for making money, it was also for shaping minds.  In fact, Adolph Hitler once said that if you want to control a group of people, all you have to do is control what they read, watch and hear.

For much of my life, when I thought about Essence Magazine, I thought about black women.   Now, when I think about Essence, I think about what white people want black women to become.  The mind can be under occupation in the same way that one colonizes a foreign country, and in the space of African American media, it’s difficult to argue that we’re not a conquered and imperialized group of people.

The pressure to assimilate is overwhelming when I look at how most of the radio stations our kids listen to are owned by big corporations like Clear Channel, who don’t care that commercialized hip-hop music is teaching young boys how to grow up and become murderers and r*pists.  Television Networks like BET seem to believe that it should once again be illegal for black people to learn how to read.  Even TV One, the “good version” of BET (a network that most of us respect), is 49% owned by NBC Universal, implying that they remain officially black-owned by a mere technicality.

Essence is one of the latest victims of the perpetual paper chase that turns us into the kinds of economic addicts that are produced by a racially-oppressive capitalist society.   As black kids, we grow up believing that our goal in life is to sell our soul to the highest bidder, and that it’s OK to be an asset on someone else’s plantation, as long as our overseers allow us to live in the big house.  This opens the door to a life of fancy cars, big houses and expensive meals at the finest restaurants, where we charge it to the game without realizing that there is a massive debt to be repaid.

Then, one day, you look in the mirror and the person you see no longer has a soul.  Like the hooker on the corner who gave her baby away for another vile of crack cocaine, you realize that your worth in this world has been reduced to the size of your paycheck (which can be taken away as soon as they are finished with you).   The community you love languishes and dies, while you sit in the warmth of your corporate office with a boss telling you that the plight of “those people” has nothing to do with you.

I understand this well, because I know capitalism.  I’ve been teaching Finance at the college level for the last 20 years, and one thing I know for sure is that the powerful temptation of money can lead us to become something that we’re not, and it can literally reshape the structure of our psycho-sociological DNA, turning a righteous mission into an abandoned one.  I believe this is what happened to Essence magazine, and quite frankly, it disgusts me.

I wasn’t surprised in the least to hear former Essence editor White say that the corporate captains who own Essence were pulling the strings and dressing the magazine up in black face.  I could hear the voices of thousands of black women on our blogs who, through women’s intuition, could tell that something was wrong.   I’ll keep things simple:  If you want to understand why most corporations or politicians do anything that doesn’t make sense, just follow the money.  Its much more profitable to sell beauty tips and relationship advice than it is to discuss controversial topics like racism, poverty or the prison industrial complex.  Purely capitalist organizations are not designed to incur these kinds of risks.

I don’t hate Essence Magazine, but I think that we should not define the magazine by what it used to be.  Instead, we should define it by what it is.  Essence Magazine is NOT a publication designed for the empowerment and independence of African American women.  It is a magazine that is run and owned by a big corporation with mostly white shareholders who have positioned the brand to get access to the spending power of African American women.   Ladies, the magazine is certainly wired to SERVE you, but it is not wired to LIBERATE you.   There is a very big difference between the two.

Susan Taylor left the building long ago and Essence has “evolved.”  The painful truth that we must realize is that to truly create black-owned media that empowers the African American community, we must be able to think beyond the financial bottom line.  Economic inequality is the last great hurdle of black civil rights, and overcoming starts with the power of OWNERSHIP.

  1. Do Black folks own the magazine ?

  2. 10 Things You Thought Were Black Owned – Clutch Magazine

May 23, 2010 – Essence Magazine The publication that was once the second largest black publication …

I totally agree with the earlier years of Essence magazine and Susan Taylor use to
fascinate me with her articles and her style I can remember as far back
as the 70′s, now the magazine is absolutely horrible.

    • Yes, Yes, Yes… Thank You! There were soooooo many great, thought provoking, well written articles back in the day! The mag sucks now.

  4. Essence is OWNED by caucasoids! This is why when you turn the cover; the FIRST picture you see is usually a caucasoid fe-male.

Nothing is Black-owned any longer, he.ll, Blacks don’t even own themselves because they are too busy trying to look like caucasoids. You even have negroid males, who are dying their hair blond. This is the slave-like mentally the majority of negroids have today because they THINK that being beautiful is looking like a caucasoid!

This is why they don’t even want to say the word BLACK any longer because they think it’s a degrading word, but if they knew that the color Black means LIFE, THE MESSIAH, AND UNIVERSAL MANKIND, they would start addressing themselves as BLACK instead of calling themselves a minority! What the he.ll is a minority?

Anythang caucasoids call them, they will accept, but when they hear the Truth, they don’t want to hear it!

Just look at all these negroids, who are BLEACHING their skin. This is the #1 killer in Jamacia!!! So, many Jamacians are bleaching their skin, it has become a DEATHLY EPIDEMIC!!!

Now you see why I call them, negroids; they ain’t nothing, but chocolate covered caucasoids!!!

    • Wow Derrick why do you always speak such vile and hatred things I have read your comments before and you never have anything positive to say I understand your anger but this is no way to express it.We should have an intelligent conversation and express our views and opinions without all the name calling such as negroids, you say we don’t want too use the word black any longer yet you use a phrase negroid)that does not exist anywhere in the dictionary.I agree with Boyce Watkins that Essence is not what it use too be in that it truly does not bring attention to the black woman anymore but one way to get the message thru too Essence is simple(Don’t buy the magazine)

      • “We should have an intelligent conversation and express our views and opinions without all the name calling such as negroids, you say we don’t want too use the word black any longer yet you use a phrase negroid)that does not exist anywhere in the dictionary.”
        +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have an old dictinary, that is over 50 years old, and the word negroid is in it. You must OVERstand that Webster’s and the other dictionaries took out a lot of words, but this dictionary is over 50 years old!

Here’s the True meaning of the word negroid:

        1. like, or characteristic of the negro or negroes; [sometimes a member of any dominantly negro people.

Here’s the meaning of the word negro:

        1. black; black person , a member of the dominant black race of Africa, living chiefly in the Congo and Sudan regions; a member of any of the other black races of Africa, as a Bantu, hottentot, etc.; any person with some negro ancestors, of, for, or being a negro or negroes.

One day when you have time go to your local library and look these words up, perhaps you will believe me.

I said that, to say this; when I use the word negroid, I am talking about ‘negroes’, who are still under the guise their caucasoid massa’s. A negroid (in my opinion) is nothing, but a chocolate covered caucasoid.

Here’s the meaning of the word caucasoid

        1. Of or relating to the caucasian division of humankind; of or relating to caucasian people;

        2. (Social Science / Peoples) denoting, relating to, or belonging to the light-complexioned racial group of mankind, which includes the peoples indigenous to Europe, N Africa, SW Asia, and the Indian subcontinent and their descendants in other parts of the world.

Key word: North Afrika. Check this out: The best destinations in North Africa include top attractions in Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia…ALL BLACK COUNTRIES LOCATED “IN AFRIKA”!!!

Therefore, a caucasoid could also be a negroid!!! The ONLY difference is the COLOR OF THEIR SKIN, which they are separated by DARK SKIN or LIGHT SKIN!!! Morocco is situated on the extreme northwestern corner of Africa and is bordered by Mauritania and Algeria, BOTH WERE ONCE BLACK NATIONS!!!

WE ALL KNOW THAT KEMET (EGYPT) WAS ONCE OCCUPIED BY “DARK BLACK PEOPLE”. Kemet (Egypt) is the most popular tourist destination in Africa, attracting around 10 million visitors per year. I WONDER WHY? This is why, congress has classified Kemet (Egypt) as the Middle East, instead of Afrika!!! How can that be when Kemet (Egypt) is LOCATED IN AFRIKA? These caucasoids want to separate Kemet (Egypt) from Afrika because it has become a pale nation, like amrikkka!!! IT’S CALLED ‘RACIAL CLASSIFICATION’.

CHECK THIS OUT: A ‘white’ person, according to the census bureau is a person having origins

And, lastly the country of Tunisia was also once a Black nation.Tunisia is a country with a small population which is located in the continent/region of Africa.

Let’s get a little deeper with this INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION.

        • continued:

According to the census bureau: A white person is a person having origins in any of the ORIGINAL people’s of eu(rope), NORTH AFRIKA, or the Middle East!!!

The ORIGINAL people, who inhabited eu(rope) were Black Afrikans called the Grimaldi people! GO LOOK THEM UP. The ORIGINAL people, who once occupied the MIDDLE EAST were Afrikans. Therefore, caucasoid’s roots came from Black Afrikans, and they DENY THIS TRUTH because they know, they are not INDIGENOUS or ORIGINAL to ANYTHANG!!! THE CAME FROM US!!!

KEY WORD: Middle East. Since NORTH AFRIKANS and MIDDLE EASTERNERS HAVE BLACK SKIN, how can they be classified as, ‘white’? Y’all have been DECEIVED because you don’t READ or RESEARCH the Truth!

Now, let’s roll this ball down the hill and close:

ALL cultures were born from BLACK AFRIKANS!!! I use the term negroid in a deragatory way because my people have become so infactuated with BECOMING ‘WHITE’, they have lost their BLACK RACIAL IDENTITY!!! Negroids are now BLEAChing their skin to become light (white). They want to be called a ‘minority’ because this word has NO RACIAL IDENTITY!!! A MINORority is nothing, but a chocolate covered caucasoid!!!

If you knew the True miniorities are caucasoids, who are only 8% of the world’s population, while Black and brown people are 92%; you would not be using this DEGRADING term!!! Therefore, how can you be a ‘minority’ when we OUTNUMBER them?

In case you didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘minority’, here it is: a RACIAL, religious, national, or POLITICAL GROUP “SMALLER” than, and differing from the larger CONTROLLING GROUP of which it is a part. Key word: POLITICAL GROUP. They (caucasoids) only use this word in a POLITICAL setting, and are calling y’all (who use this word) a MINOR, or their “kids”, because y’all OBEY them, and accept what they put on their plate, which is nothing, but CRUMBS.

The word ‘minority’ contains the word MINOR. A minor is lesser in size, amount, NUMBER, OR extent; LESSER IN IMPORTANCE or rank. In other words you are NOT IMPORTANT to caucasoids!!!

A MINOR is still UNDER his parents RULES and REGULATIONS!!! You negroids are still UNDER the caucasoid’s RULES and REGULATIONS because you have ACCEPTED being the LESSER OF THE GROUP, but I just said, that Blacks OUT NUMBER caucasoids, but you negroids continue to call yourselves MINORorities instead of BLACK!!!

This is why I get frustrated because I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE ANGRY because you negroids DON’T KNOW YOUR TRUE OURstory!!! You don’t know the code language these caucasoids talk when they refer to you as a MINORority!

When they use this word; they ALWAYS say women (white women) or amerikkkans (white folks), and MINORorities (meaning Black people). They put their GROUP BEFORE US!!! They NEVER group themselves as being a MINORority!!! WAKE UP!!! But, they are the True MINORorities world-wide and they are becoming a MINORority here in racist amerikkka. This is why they are killing us, and buying weapons, so they can WIPE US OUT!!!

In closing; are you a MINORority or a negroid? Or, are you a STRONG BLACK WOMAN, WHO IS PROUD OF BEING BLACK?

YOU AIN’T GONNA HERE THIS SERMON IN CHURCH (Entertainment Center)

          • WEll Derrick I am a black Woman and proud of it however I refuse to go t*t for tat with you but I will say this. I have too much respect for others on this website who are trying to get their point across just as you are and even if the word Negroid is in the dictionary I wouldn’t stoop so low as to refer to another black person as being such.Anyone who use such degrogitory language toward others whom they don’t know and behind a computer screen has to be someone who has some serious anger issues along with low self esteem, and no self respect and because you speak too others in the same manner as you did me let me know that this is normal for you and it’s probably the way that you talk to your own family and I pray that you are not married and have no children because if you are you would be a poor excuse for a father and husband take one chill pill at the rate you are going you will probably have a stroke or heart attack sooner or later beleive me it’s not that serious

          • @rosemary: “…it’s probably the way that you talk to your own family and I pray that you are not married and have no children because if you are you would be a poor excuse for a father and husband…”
            ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For your information, I was married for 15 years, and produced a son, who will be GRADUATING from college next month! His degree is in Computer Science. He has TWO jobs, paying his OWN way to school (and I helped him also); he has his own car, and he dresses like me…SHARP and he’s very respectful!!! He also tutors high school children in math!!!

Next, I don’t know what you’re talking about, as far as, my comment to you is concerned. NOTHING about it was deragatory, and EVERYTHANG I said, was the Truth. If you’re too timid to OVERstand and comprehend the Truth, that’s your problem; not mine.

I will be graduating from college next year in COMMUNICATIONS, I have MY OWN place, car, I can cook (I never eat that garbage fast food), I keep a clean apartment, and I respect my elders, and lady friends. I also tutor children, help the elderly, run errands for them, such as taking them to the store, doctor’s office, and even cook for them every now and then.

They treat me with respect; therefore, I return the gratitude. They KNOW ME, you don’t!

Therefore, your statement about me is MUTE! You don’t know a da.mn thang about me, and furthermore, NEGROIDS like you are a dime a dozen. No wonder you negroid females are so lonely, hateful toward the BLACK man, and love caucasoids; it’s because you are afraid to SPEAK UP and SPEAK OUT to them, like I always say.

It’s amazing, how you negroids can’t stand the way I address these caucasoids, who are coming on this site posing as Black, and make deragatory comments, about Black people, while y’all sit back and say NOTHING! I even have a cracker coward, who is duplicating my name…now what?

And, if they are a negroid, they’re still a caucasoid becuase they both act the same…STUPID and DUMB!! Remember, a negroid is just a chocolate covered caucasoid.

These demonic devils don’t give a da.mn about you negroids, they’re just keeping you negroids in your place, such as yourself, so they can continue to promote DIVISION, HATE, and WEAKNESS.

“I said that, to say this; when I use the word negroid, I am talking about ‘negroes’, who are still under the guise of their caucasoid massa’s.
A negroid (in my opinion) is nothing, but a chocolate covered caucasoid.” -Derrick

I know, buy your comment you just posted; you are under the guise of YOUR caucasoid massa. You’re too chicken-hearted to address these crackers, that have you THINKING they are Black.

WAKE UP, AND OBSERVE BECAUSE KNOWLEDGE IS LEARNED, BUT WISDOM IS OBSERVING!!!

By the way…I’m in perfect health with NO ‘heart problems’

I RESPECT PEOPLE, WHO RESPECT ME!!!

This ain’t no t.it for tat, this is TRUTH with FACTS! Deal with it!

            I’m outta here..

      • Where do you live I have a Webster’ dict. 2005 Negroid is there

      • When the company starts getting back bulk issues of Essence because they went unsold in the bookstores and the magazine rack, what’s to stop them from publishing the magazine period? Yes, Denise such a possibility can become a reality. It happened to Soul Newspaper started by Ken and Regina Jones in 1966. A corporation got it in the late 80′s or early 90′s. Goodbye black entertainers, you no longer had a means of getting your stories told to your fans and supporters. Derrick is dishing it out Thelonious Monk style; Straight no chaser. Heavens knows I’ve seen and read enough “sugar coating”. Enough “going along in order to get along”. What’s the by-product? A glut of reality shows, gangsta rap, which is yards, feet and miles away from this innovative music when it first came out. GIGO, garbarge in, garbarge out.

      • Derrick is a 5 percenter. The use of the word “overstand” comes straight from Elijah Muhammad and his
pseudo Islamic religion. The mad scientist Yacub created Whites to bedevil Blacks my foot.

  5. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUE:

NO MAGAZINE HAS EVER EMPOWERED ME TO DO ANYTHING. I STOPPED READING ESSENCE UNDER SUSAN TAYLOR. I DIDN’T LIKE ALL THAT GLORIFYING OF FOREIGN BLACK COUNTRIES, AND SOLICITATIONS OF US TO VISIT THEM TO HELP HER PEOPLE WITH OUR SPENDING, WHILE FOREIGN BLACKS DO NOTHING BUT TAKE FROM THE BLACK AMERICAN COMMUNITY AND NEVER GIVE US ANYTHING BACK. AND ALL THAT TALK ABOUT NATURAL NAPPY UNATTRACTIVE HAIR THAT SHE WAS PROMOTING.

TAYLOR USED THE MAG IN THE VERY SAME MANNER AS WHITES – TO SELL PRODUCTS/CARIBBEAN VACATIONS. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SELLING PRODUCTS THAT CREATE JOBS IN AMERICA.

FEEDING OURSELVES IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN SITTING AROUND TALKING ABOUT BULLSH8T HISTORY, AND POLITICS. WE NEED FOOD AND SHELTER NOW! YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO PRIORITIZE.

YOU SAY THE CURRENT ESSENCE IS NOT HERE TO LIBERATE US LOL THAT IS THE MOST FOOLISH COMMENT EVER MADE. THE MOST FREE MAN CAN BE IN STATEVILLE PENITENTIARY, BUT IF HIS MIND IS ELSEWHERE HE IS FREE.

YOU TEACH FINANCE BUT ARE CONFUSED ABOUT THE FREEDOM THAT GREAT FINANCES CAN BRING. WEALTH CAN FREE YOU FROM THE SLAVERY AND DRUDGERY OF A JOB THAT SAPS THE LIFE OUT OF YOU AND SENDS YOU TO AN EARLY GRAVE, BUT YOU DEMONIZE ENTERTAINERS WHO ARE EXERCISING THEIR RIGHTS TO GAIN WEALTH LEGALLY.

YOU TALK ON AND ON ABOUT YOUNG BOYS WHO ESCAPED THE DRUG LIFE, AND MAKE CLAIM THAT TALKING/RAPPING CAN DESTROY CHILDREN, BUT POISONOUS DRUG SELLERS AND THE VIOLENCE CREATED DOES NOT – IN YOUR MIND. IF YOU DONT HAVE A LEGAL JOB FOR THESE BOYS STFU!!! THE LESSER OF THE 2 EVILS IS FOR THE BOYS TO RAP AND CREATE OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR YOUNG HOOD BROTHERS OUTSIDE OF THE DRUG GAME THAT SENDS THEM TO AN EARLY DEATH.

YOU DIRTY PIECES OF OLD EDUCATED JEALOUS HORSE DOODOO HAVE MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR OUR YOUNG BLACK RAPPERS TO CREATE JOBS/ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR BLACK GIRLS DANCING IN THEIR VIDEOS AND NOW OUR RAPPERS ARE MARRYING THESE NON-BLACK GIRLS AND TRANSFERRING THEIR RAP MILLIONS OUTSIDE THE BLACK AMERICAN COMMUNITY, JUST LIKE THE IGNORANT BALLERS AND ACTORS YOU LOVE TO PRAISE.

MY SON SAID ARABS AND FOREIGN BLACKS ARE WORKING HARD TO TAKE OVER THE RAP GAME, AND THAT AT THE CLUB HE GOES TO GANGS OF ARABS COME IN AND REQUEST NOTHING BUT ARABS RAPPING, AND THE HISPANICS DO THE SAME WITH PIT BULL, ETC. SO YOUR WISH TO RETURN OUR YOUNG BLACK BOYS BACK TO THE STREETS AND JAILHOUSES IS COMING INTO FRUITION. I’M SURE THAT MAKES YOU REAL HAPPY.

YOU DONT SAY A DARN THING ABOUT ALL THESE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG BLACK GIRLS BY THE MILLIONS STRIPPING, DRINKING AND DRUGGING AND PROSTITUTING ALL OVER THIS NATION IN WHITE OWNED CLUBS. YOU SAY NOTHING. YOU’D RATHER THEY STRIP FOR WHITE MEN THAN DANCE IN BLACK MEN VIDEOS AND BE IN MOVIES. R U CRAZY???

THEN YOU WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT A DRUG SELLING BLACK WOMAN, APPLAUDING HER FOR STEALING AN EDUCATION FOR HER SON, BREAKING THE LAWS BY SELLING DRUGS, SENDING HIM TO A SCHOOL HE WASN’T ELIGIBLE TO GO TO, AND YOU SUPPORT THAT. WHAT KIND OF FOOL ARE YOU TO ENCOURAGE BLACK PEOPLE TO VIOLATE THE LAWS YOU KNOW THAT WILL SURELY TAKE AWAY THEIR FREEDOM. MAYBE YOU THINK ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS READ A MAGAZINE TO GET OUT OF PRISON. IS THAT IT???

WORSE OF ALL YOU WORKED WITH THEM AFRICANS TO SUPPORT SHAWTY LO NOT GETTING A LEGITIMATE JOB ON TV TO SUPPORT HIS CHILDREN. DO YOU REALLY REALIZE HOW SICK YOU SOUND WHEN YOU SAY YOU WANT TO HELP LIBERATE PEOPLE. MAYBE THEM HAITIANS AND AFRICANS DIDN’T KNOW BETTER WHEN THEY STARTED THAT PETITION, BUT AS AN EDUCATED AMERICAN MAN YOU KNEW THAT YOU WERE VIOLATING HIS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, AND YOU ALSO KNOW THAT IF SHAWTY HAS TO RETURN TO DRUG DEALING TO FEED HIS CHILDREN, HIS FREEDOM WILL BE TAKEN AWAY.

YOU KNOW ALL OF THAT, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO ANSWER FOR IT ONE DAY. YOU SHOULD BE LEADING THEM FOREIGN BLACKS BUT INSTEAD YOU ARE LETTING THEM LEAD YOU STRAIGHT TO h**l.

    • @dizzy denise:

“YOU DIRTY PIECES OF OLD EDUCATED JEALOUS HORSE DOODOO HAVE MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR OUR YOUNG BLACK RAPPERS TO CREATE JOBS/ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR BLACK GIRLS DANCING IN THEIR VIDEOS AND NOW OUR RAPPERS ARE MARRYING THESE NON-BLACK GIRLS…”

“YOU DONT SAY A DARN THING ABOUT ALL THESE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG BLACK GIRLS BY THE MILLIONS STRIPPING, DRINKING AND DRUGGING AND PROSTITUTING ALL OVER THIS NATION IN WHITE OWNED CLUBS. YOU SAY NOTHING. YOU’D RATHER THEY STRIP FOR WHITE MEN THAN DANCE IN BLACK MEN VIDEOS AND BE IN MOVIES. R U CRAZY???”

“WORSE OF ALL YOU WORKED WITH THEM AFRICANS TO SUPPORT SHAWTY LO NOT GETTING A LEGITIMATE JOB ON TV TO SUPPORT HIS CHILDREN.”
      ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

These slave azz Boule, Illuminati, Bootlickin, Trifling, sc(rappers) ain’t shyt on a stick! If you had an ounce of sense; you wouldn’t want our Black girls stripping for crackers or dancing and shakin’ their azzes on these videos. They ain’t nothing, but video ‘ho’s and these dumb azz negroids/caucasoid, who agree with our dumb azz comments, wouldn’t want their daughters shakin’ their nasty azzes NOWHERE!

WHY DON’T YOU TELL YOUR DAUGHTER TO GO SHAKE HER AZZ? (if you have one)

These dumb azz sc(rappers) don’t have ANY SAY-SO, with what they do because they are OWNED by these cracker khazars, who OWN the music, entertainment, and entertainment centers (churches) in this racist country. THEY OWN AND TELL THESE NEGROID sc(rappers) how to dress, sing and act. They will not let a SMOOTH MESSAGE MUSIC RAPPER record for them because they tell them that SHYT DON’T SELL!!! These khazars want these young pvnks to DEGRADE themselves, their women, and their minds because the ONLY thang, these pvnk azz negroids want is money, bling, and cars!

ALL THAT SHYT IS RENTED IN THOSE VIDEOS, AND NONE THEM OWN A GODDA.MN THANG! THEY DON’T EVEN OWN THEIR SOULS!!!

As far as Shawty “Down Low”, is concerned; he is a disgrace to Black men and Black women. Who in the he.ll wanted to see a dumb azz sc(rapper) on tell-a-LIE-vision with 11 or 12 ‘ho azz women, who had his babies? That statement you made, shows me that you ain’t NOTHING, but a caucasoid!

These stupid azz negroids, who want to ‘marry’ you or ‘ditto’ you don’t see NO DA.MN TRUTH, and they need to change their screen names because THEY DON’T “SEE” WITH THIER MELINATED MIND!!! They have a hole in the center of their Soul…In other words…NOTHING!!!

YOU NEGROIDS ARE SO FVCKED UP YOU DON’T KNOW YOUR AZZ FROM YOUR NOSE!!! Y’ALL WILL WIPE YOUR NOSE WITH TOILET PAPER, BUT WILL WIPE YOUR AZZES WITH S.O.S. PADS!!!

These dumb down negroids will agree with your cracker azz, but when it comes to Truth, Knowledge & Wisdom, they turn-the-other-cheek, along with their azz cheeks!!!

GET OUTTA HERE WITH THAT BULLSHYT!!!

    • I agree; could not have said it better; all this complaining has grown tired!

  6. denise, WILL YOU MARRY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • No, but I will speak the truth and stand firmly on it without fear, when it comes to O’drama or whatever foolishness these bought and paid for negro uncle toms dish out. I’m convinced they’re paid to destroy their own communities. It is only a matter of time before the people RISE UP and realize it. Maybe that’s why they want our guns taken away!!! Epiphany.

I am so sad for everyone between the ages of 15 and 35. ALL of you are at a greater risk than slaves were. Slaves were valuable commodities, protected, sheltered and fed (like animals, but they were allowed to live). The black man’s mistreatment of you, his gullibility when it comes to protecting you, and lack of wisdom leaves his offspring in jeopardy of being used and mis-used by every predator on the planet.

  7. Jonathan Sebastian Blount

The essence of ESSENCE is quite OURSTORY!

  8. Bahati Sobukwe

‘Would somebody please tell me what this ‘denise’ is? What is she talking about? What doe she mean,”nappy hair that was unattractive?” What is this,”bullshit history” she’s talking about? What does she mean, We’re not suppose to be concerned with politics, when the essence of our survival is testament to how politics is played.

What is she talking about rappers marrying white women because they can’t rap filth– anymore? They are marrying them because they don’t know what she called “bullshit history”. That’s the reason why, and what do we care if other people want to start calling their women ‘b*****s and hoes’. God know rappers have demeaned our women to no end. I don’t care if they are homeless that’s what they deserve for the damage they have done!

She goes on and on, tell me, is she a very sick OREO black or is she WHITE? I wonder how much do they pay her to come on this site and try
    that kind of confusion?

    • Since the end of apartheid, migrants from across Africa have gone to South Africa, attracted by its relative prosperity.
The BBC’s Caroline Hawley in Johannesburg says the immigrants have become a scapegoat for social problems, such as unemployment, crime and a lack of housing. Mobs of South Africans continue to roam around some townships near Johannesburg, looking for foreigners and looting their shops.
Some 6,000 people have fled a wave of attacks on foreigners in South Africa, which has left at least 22 dead, aid workers say.
The front pages of several South African newspapers on Monday show a horrific image of a man being burnt to death.

AND THEY COME TO AMERICA AND HATE ON BLACK AMERICANS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY, AFTER TAKING OUR JOBS AND HOUSING. AND THE FOOL OPRAH WINFREY FEEDS THEM, WHILE THEY HATE ON HER FOREIGN AZZ BEHIND HER BACK.

  9. Dr. Boyce I respect and admire what you have done creasting your own independent blog/newsletter communication network in the Black community. You are not just talking creative, innovative, implementation, and execution, you are doing it. I’m concerned that again we easily find ourselves overwhelmed with the negativity going on in our community. I know you must feel the importance of helping us be informed, however the negativity is overwhelming me and I need more achievement and accomplishment weighted presentation from YOUR BLACK WORLD.
    Thank you

  10. Yes it has (Let’s Face it, Essence Magazine Has Lost it’s “Essence”). Back in the day, Essence used to have so many great articles. But, over the last couple of years, eh! Like my grandparents would always say, ‘Baby, times are changing’.. hahahahahaha

  11. wow…I am at a loss for words..that person”denise” cannot be black, I think he or she…or better yet “IT” is a angry ignorant fool..dont waste any more time on parasites like that. As far as Essence is concerned I have not read or brought a magazine since I saw REGGIE BUSH on the cover a athelete who clearly has not intrest in black women. When I was a kid I couldnt wait for me mom to get that magazine I read it front to back I loved how the magazine use to showcase black women of all hues..the articles were upliftiting and positive. It was the one magazine I could read that didnt make me feel brainwashed and made to feel that beacuase I was a black women i some how was not deemed beautiful..That magazine worked hard at showing our true ESSENCE as black women. Why do we allow these white corperations to keep taking what is ours? How is it possible that a magazine geared towards black women, as soon as you open it up the first thing you see is a white women? STOP BUYING IT! it is garbage now. I hope the people that still subscribe end thier subscription and send them a message and demand change and better content.

    • I hope you go back to your own country and make changes and stay out of our business. And dont lie that you’re black american. I know one when I see one.

It doesn’t surprise me you cant comprehend the wisdom I put down. Your response only confirms to me that almost all of you foreign blacks are NOT qualified to lead anything, whether it govt, entertainment or business. Yet you crawl out of your cave and come here and brainwash gullible negro leaders with your black unity LIE, and behind our backs you run to white americans and suck up and beg for our jobs, and promise to be good little slaves if he would only give you every opportunity our ancestors worked hard to make happen for their AMERICAN black offspring. Go HOME!

  12. Black women including celebrities need to boycott Essence and just drive them out of business. I’m often appalled and offended by the content they publish now. It’s ALOT of dumbing down and ignorant stuff that is shameful and embarrassing.

  13. I think that self-hating poison has reached a very large proportion of black media today so I guess we’re just going to have a problem with about 95% of what some of brother & sisters put out as decent journalism.

I’m going to tell us our first ever crime; at some point WE decided that what WE had (Africa/3-squillion + years of civilisation) was not good enough and we traded it for the European’s way of life which we thought was better than our own legacy!
The day we did this our lives, to say the least, changed for the worse and OUR decision caused our 400 plus years suffering in Africa and the diaspora….in short ‘negroids’ were around BACK then, and they still are NOW!!

We don’t even look or act as though we even want to turn our community around through unification; we want to attack each other’s religion, organisation, complexion, hair texture etc and YET some of us are stupid enough to think we’re going to make positive changes without such a negative back-drop as the core of our thinking.

I think what we all need is absolute DIVINE intervention from the Most High, and whatever harsh lesson He decides to extend to us for us to learn from in order do something positive for and by ourselves FIRST I just hope (inshallah) that its not too harsh for our assess, because maybe thats what we need in order to WAKE UP….ESPECIALLY THE WATERMELLON-CHUMPING, BUTTERED BISCUIT & CHICKEN EATING, BUCK-DANCING, OVER-EDUCATED ‘OH I’VE MADE IT’, APOLOGETIC NEGROIDS!!!

    ONE LOVE!!!

  14. CORRECTION

“…stupid enough to think we’re going to make positive changes with such a negative back-drop as the core of our thinking.”

  15. “WAKE UP….ESPECIALLY THE WATERMELLON-CHUMPING, BUTTERED BISCUIT & CHICKEN EATING, BUCK-DANCING, OVER-EDUCATED ‘OH I’VE MADE IT’, APOLOGETIC NEGROIDS!!!”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

These APOLOGETIC NEGROIDS are too far gone to wake up! As you stated, they think that ‘white’ piece of paper (degree) will make caucasoids love them, and respect them.

Unfortunately, they are used to these Boule’ negroids, like Sharptongue Sharpton, Messy Jessy, and Suzzy Rice, who come to them with their rhymes and rhetoric to keep them at the bottom of the ship.

These spitting, puking, sweating azz screachas, also have these negroids messed up. All they do is scream and holla telling their lost flock to give them 10% of their money, so they can take a trip to ‘heaven’, and live happily ever after…with white folks!

I ain’t never seen so many sympathetic, chicken-hearted, chitlin’ eating negroids, who love these crackers!!! IT’S UNBELIEVABLE!!!

This is why these fake crackers, who come on this site posing as Black, got these negroid’s minds fvcked up. They put up Black faces, to TRICK these negroids, and these “UNDER-EDUCATED” negroids fall for their bullshyt! This is how we became enslaved because those xtian missionaries TRICKED our Black ancestors to beLIEve in “THEIR” god, which is the devil, but we were GODS and GODDESSES!!!

I ain’t scared to post the Truth because the Truth is like cement…when it’s laid out; it HARDENS! And, these soft slave-like negroids are too soft to accept the HARD Truth. Now, I OVERstand, how our enslaved brothers and sisters were BRAINWASHED because those slave makers INJECTED them with LIES, DECEIT, TRICKERY, and they fell for the okey doke!

The only time these negroids comment on anythang is when ‘educated negroids’ talk about each other, but when it comes to defend their own kind, against these serpents, they don’t say shyt because they still have that slave syndrome mentality.

I don’t give a da.mn about these TWO-FACED, JEALOUS HEARTED,ENVIOUS BACKSTABBING HATEFUL NEGROIDS on this site because I’m gonna tell it like it is, regardless of what these heartless slaves think of me.

The Black Messiah said, he came with a sword; not in peace!!!
Matthew 10:34 reads: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

These PEACEFUL turn-the-other-cheek negroids are should start practicing what the Black Messiah teaches them! An eye for an eye, a foot for a foot, a hand for a hand, and a LIFE for a LIFE!!!

THESE HATERS SMELL SO BAD, I CAN SMELL THROUGH MY COMPUTER!!!

    ONE LOVE!

  16. Hmmm, just bought Mar issue (LL Cool J on the cover):

    Topics:
LL Cool J- How he Stands by his woman- A black woman whom he has been married to for over 20 years!

End your student loan debt (applicable to black women)

8 Surprising ways to reduce your stress (applicable to black women!)

    Black Women in Hollywood (hello?!)

Health Special- Help for Depression, Infertility, and Asthma (applicable to black women, although the article is unrealistic since most black women can’t afford the $20,000 (and up) fertility treatments. The information is presented in a well-balanced way for those who can afford)

I love the new magazine under Constance White!

  17. The fact that Wendy Williams is on the cover is indicative that everything in America is becoming: low quality. Wendy is the new talk show queen in America. She replaces Ophra. Ophra ( whether you agreed with her or not), was a person of character. She had thought-provoking shows. Wendy is all about gossip. And gossip is all about nothing. She’s also had Donald Trump on her show, twice. The fact that Essence would have her on the cover of its mag (just like Ebony had Nene Leakes) shows you how far down we’ve gone in terms of the quality of our publications. It doesn’t matter how popular these publications are. After all,the Jerry Springer show is quite popular, too. When we fully owned our publications, they had better quality. They represented and celebrated people of subtance.

  18. Just subscribed one week before this fiasco, I won’t reup when the time comes. Bring back Susan Taylor.

  21. “Overstand?” Derrick is obviously a follower of Elijah Mohammed. He of the White people were created by the mad scientist Yacub. I see his name and Denise’s name and skip to the next post.

    • I don’t FOLLOW nobody! I’m my own man, and don’t you forget it.

Speaking of Yakub; in the bible, he is called Jacob, the father of the caucasoid race!

You demonic devils are our children, and it’s time to start obeying us because your days are numbered.

KEEP BUYING THOSE GUNS BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO NEED THEM WHEN THE REVOLUTION STARTS!!!

      NOW, SKIP ON THAT!!!

  22. As much I would love to have the old Essence back, I can’t help but think about my own time as a writer. I remember, the very first article I wrote, I submitted it to Essence Magazine (I’m black). I received it back with guidelines for rewriting the article. I moved on to novels but a few months later, I found my ideas in the magazine, with another woman’s name where my name should have been. This is when your friend, Susan L. Taylor was editor-in-chief. Frankly, after that, I couldn’t read Essence anymore. I think they need to practice what they preach instead of stealing ideas. PMPD

    • WOW– I’ve had like experience with WBLS radio station; I wrote them about creating a play about the late great Mr.Excitement Jackie Wilson, and never heard from them. A few years passed;and low and behold they produced the play- which I went to see at the Apollo theater.

Greed and N-g-adumb is all that comes to mind; which is why we aren’t as economically sound as a people. The inability to share with one and other creates a vacuum for all others to exploit us for our wealth as well as our ideas.

      Peace

  23. I do not read that magazine. I was at my Doctors office and saw copies of Essence there. The only difference from or the other white magazines there, was the brown faces. As far as I am concerned we have no Black Magazines.

  24. Essence magazine used to be about African American Women of Color. Now,before the money explosion,Essence magazine would talk about the community and the problems and resolutions in our communnities. Marriage and children, fashion, skin care is important to us because we like to and want to feel good about ourselves. Now,advertistments are more while there are less interesting reading materials about marriage and the problems that we live and endure in our communities. I no longer buy Essence Magazines and I will not buy another magazine until the magazine start informing us women instead of reforming us to be something that we are not. I am a African American woman who wants a magazine to focus on the essence of women. And, to think of all the work it took for the original owner to develop this magazine because we could not be on another magazine booklet. I love Essence Magazine for what it was originally designed. However, I do not like what the magazine has become. I would love to buy the magazine. But, the magazine must catch my intrest or I will not buy it. I wiah the magazine well with prosperity.

  25. I remember the very FIRST magazine when it came out I believe in 1970. I was so excited. So much to read. When you compare those to today’s magazine, you wonder how they stayed in business back then. There were never this amount of advertisements.

  26. I stopped reading Essence many years ago. I can remember me measuring how much Susan Taylor’s hairline slid back every month. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll see if I can find a recent photo of her. Anyway, I knew that one day this magazine would fall into the wrong hands.

    • Phylicia Zachary

You know that’s wrong talking about that woman’s hairline! What does that have to do with anything? Why are so many of you so filled with hatred against fellow black people? Has the white devil gotten to you and colonized your minds, hearts and souls that much? Please, liberate yourself from this self-hatred and love yourself and other black people. White people surely ain’t going to do it, no matter how hard to kiss up to them!

  27. Jah Larry Dread

Essence – “It is a magazine that is run and owned by a big corporation with mostly white shareholders who have positioned the brand to get access to the spending power of African American women. Ladies, the magazine is certainly wired to SERVE you, but it is not wired to LIBERATE you. There is a very big difference between the two”…So true. I used to buy this magazine on a regular and refer too many of its articles in social setting and debates. Now I see the magazine as half a step from the tabloids.

  30. Stopped my subscription over 15 yrs ago….totally irrelevant with amoral celebrities on the cover (P Diddy and his baby mama drama stories still burns me up), pushing the gay agenda, sharing men and other issues that I do not agree with — so I don’t buy the magazine. Dr. Boyce is right, when Marcia Gillespie and Susan Taylor left, it was over.

  31. They’ll keep the magazine — while we support their Essence Music Festivals.

  32. Great publish. I used to be reviewing frequently this website for amazed! Helpful information and facts specially the previous part :) I actually take good care of similarly info very much. I’d been seeking this kind of details for the long time. Thank you and also enjoy.

  33. I am curious to find out what blog system you happen to be working with? I’m having some minor security problems with my latest blog and I’d like to find something more safe. Do you have any recommendations?
