For the first time ever, two African Americans are both set to serve in the United States Senate.  Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has taken the historic step of appointing a black man to the Senate Seat that has been vacated by John Kerry, who is now set to become Secretary of State.

William “Mo” Cowan is now taking the lead and heading to Washington to join up with Sen. Tim Scott as the only two black men to fill these hallowed chambers.

Cowan was the former Chief of Staff for Patrick and his legal counsel.   He worked for the governor from January 2011 till November 2012 and then returned to practice law in the private sector.   This is the first time that Massachusetts has had an African American in the Senate since Edward Brooke held the post as a Republican from 1966 to 1978.

Cowan is goign to be the eighth African American in history to serve as a United States Senator.  He was born in Yadkinville, North Carolina and is the son of a machinist and seamstress.  His father died when he was just 16-years old.   He was the first graduate of his high school to attend Duke University and decided to become an attorney after abandoning plans to become a doctor.

He graduated from Northwestern University Law School in 1994.

  1. Good on ya,Mr. Governor. It’s almost like Radical Reconstruction again.
Let’s hope the money stream is there to beat Scott Brown when the election rolls around. It would be a shame if the state Republicans vilify as the most liberal state votes for Brown over, well, Black.
I was a teenager when Mr. Brooke was first elected to the Senate. He was a treasure. Of course in today’s GOP he wouldn’t have a shot but those were different times, weren’t they?

    • White rascist are ALWAYS ready to put negro uncle toms in office to do their bidding. They are putting them in place all over america to destroy black america and these weak affirmative action, selfish pieces of sh8t, former ghetto kids, are lined up willing and ready to bring back jim crown, and destroy all of black america. Their leader at the top sets a great example for them. He is their role model.

Before it is all over, dumb negro votes are NOT going to celebrate the election of their executioners based on color.

  2. People were asked in 08 and before Obama’s 1st term if they were ready for black president and some said “America’s not ready”. Now I wonder if they are ready for two or more black folk in senate! Sad times we live in. Obama’s election uncovered the racism that still embarrasses us before the whole world. Colin Powell said it right recently when he said that there is a black stain in the GOP that looks down on minorities. Is it Manifest Destinty(sp) or Social Darwinism holdover from the beginning of this country? Minorities know what Michele Obama meant when she said that “For the first time in her life she is proud to be an American.” Selah.

  3. I bet the SC. senator won’t work with the Appointed Senator from MA. on new Voter Regulation laws because the senator from SC is a “tea bagger”.

  4. Good for Gov.Deval Patrick,I was not familiar with William Cowan, but I am very happy with his selection, not Bernie Franks, as much as I like Bernie Franks. I think the Democrats will and can beat Scott Brown,he might be popular at this moment, but only because the first
Democrat, the Attorney “General, did not run a good campaign against Scott Brown. He will vote with the Republican, every time and the public will remember that, the democrat that has already statedt he is running for the Senate seat from the House stands a very, very good chance of winning over Scott Brown.
Now Tim Scott, from S.C. is a true Clearance Thomas, he will have nothing to do with William Cowan, to bad he does not want to run for that seat,William Cowan, that is.

  5. Special election soon. We will see if the folks in Massachusetts will vote for the brotha. We know the Southies from Boston and Dorchester won’t ..Right black folks? Funny when u read the his-story of that state from its European settlement till now. From Prince Hall, Phillips Wheatley, Peter Bestes, Sambos Freeman, Felix Holbrook, Chester Joie, Olaudah Equiano and many others including Elizabeth Freeman caught h**l in this state. Quick Walker, Paul and John Cuffe fought hard for freedom and rights from this state. The struggle continues …Maat

  7. The US Senate is an institution where, it appears, no Blacks come come close to. Except for Senators Barack Obama, Carol Mosley Braun – all rom Illinois – and to some degree, Edward Brooke, who got into this hallowed instituition by merit, or in their own right, all other Black US Senators got in by tokenism. Yes, including Revelle from Mississippi, and another from the same state, whose bread were buttered by the reflected glories of the Reconstruction era.
Senator Burrell, who replaced now President Obama, William “Mo” Cowan, who replaces Senator Kerry, and Tim Brown, who replaces Tea party mogul, De Mint, of South Carolina, attest to these tokenism mindset. It is unlikely that Senators Brown and Cowan whould work in tandem to craft issues that would be beneficial to the Black community at large, given their ideological divide.
Blacks should be encouraged to run for the US Senate.
    Mike C. Okereke
