Those Who Attack Cornel for Speaking Up Usually Can’t Defend Their Point of View

Some are up in arms over Cornel West and his most recent critique of the Obama Administration. During the Smiley and West radio show this week, Professor West asked if Barack Obama and other Washington politicians would be so sensitive to gun violence were it not for the fact that the Sandy Hook kids were white. Here is part of what Dr. West had to say:
“They’re either cowards or hypocrites when it comes to this issue of our precious children. By cowards I mean they care but they don’t have the courage to move forward and act. Or they’re hypocrites which is to say they say they care but deep down they don’t care especially when it relates to South Side of Chicago, Harlem, children across the board…”
Of course Dr. West’s remarks were met with the standard cries of “hater” that somehow became a significant part of black political discourse over the last four years. Personally, I think the term should be banned for anyone who expects to be taken seriously. Using the term “hater” to describe every person who critiques your hero effectively turns you into nothing but a simple-minded cheerleader who follows the crowd. We need more leaders in the black community, not followers.
The ironic thing about those who attack Cornel for asking our politicians to do more for black people is that the attacks are reflective of the collective self-esteem problem that many of us have had since slavery. Somehow, we were convinced long ago that when a black man gets “a big important job” in the White House, he is somehow too important to be concerned with petty issues like the deaths of black babies, families who can’t afford to eat or millions of black people unjustly trapped in the criminal justice system. I beg to differ.
The challenge to those who want to call Cornel West a hater is simple: If he’s wrong, then PROVE IT. Show documented evidence that the Obama Administration would be or has been equally responsive to the deaths of black children as they are to white ones. For every child who died at Sandy Hook last week, there are at least 10 children who’ve died on the south side of Chicago over the past three years. So, anyone who believes that there has been parity in the administrative response to gun violence is as delusional as any card-carrying member of the KKK.
Someone recently asked me, “Where were Cornel and his criticism during the Clinton and Bush administrations?” I responded, “He was right where he is right now. But people expected him to change his tune because there was a black man in office. Also, people didn’t start listening until we got a president that everyone felt black people should unanimously support without ever questioning his leadership.”
Dr. West has been incredibly consistent when advocating for poor, black and brown people in America. What also remain consistent are the forces of oppression coming from those who don’t feel that the preservation of black life is worth any significant investment of political capital. Had Barack Obama been president during the Civil War, the slaves would never have been freed, largely because Abraham Lincoln had to take serious political risks in order to secure passage of the 13th amendment. I have yet to see any example in which the Obama Administration has taken an equivalent risk on behalf of black people (he is even afraid to grant commutation to drug offenders sentenced under laws that have expired). In that regard, Cornel could be right about the president’s cowardice, at least when it comes to people who look like his wife, Michelle.
Attacking Cornel West, calling him a hater, and saying that you want him quiet is the easy way out. The natural corollary for such an attack on Cornel is to somehow presume that the beloved figures in the Obama Administration are doing all they can to support the black community. To date, the evidence is simply lacking.
If you want to shut down the critique of Cornel West, then PROVE-HIM-WRONG. If you can’t do that, then you don’t have a leg to stand on.

I concur with the writer Dr West and Tavis Smiley are absolutely right and for those who find fault in the “call out” of this president shut them up and PROVE THEM WRONG. This president has fought for every NEW issue non related to the long history plaguing the black community yet he remains silent. The critics don’t see that the This President is like a snake he uses his venom against the black community and seems to disregard the fact that his wife is a BLACK woman and his daughters are Black girls and will always b I know they will never face the plight most black children face but he has no excuse to just ignore the black community while he fights with every ounce of breath he has to grant amnesty, to millions of illegal aliens and he continues to fight for the immoral changes in the definition of marriage which should b between a man and a woman if not why didn’t he marry a man . I agree that POVERTY is a major problem that should be addressed by our politicians, officials and others. For many, many years…long before we had a BLACK PRES. — this problem was a neglected and festering sore upon our society. After the BUSH ADMIN. helped to CRASH THE ENTIRE ECONOMY it got a lot worse. So…if there is anyone or a group that should be attacked …it is the GREEDY, POWERFUL CORPORATION who ship jobs overseas and rob the U.S. Treasury. Yes, most of them are WHITE MALES. Tavis and Cornell should put more energy into criticizing the roots of the INCOME DISPARITY in this nation…and Pres. Obama did not cause that.
I also think that Cornell West was more “on target” when he was supporting OCCUPY WALL ST. and the STOP & FRISK protests…than he is when he focuses on criticizing Pres. Obama. Pres. Obama is doing what he can in the face of the nutty TEA PARTY and the “Party of NO” in the Congress…the protectors of the rich. We have observed them kill the AMER. JOBS ACT…and they are now trying to wipe out MEALS ON WHEELS, PELL GRANTS, FOOD STAMPS, MEDICAID, etc. As Pres. he can only do so much.
You are right, Cornel should direct his ‘attack’ on caucasoids, but remember…he’s MARRIED to one!!! BUT, O’Drama should speak on this subject, since he is the president of “ALL” the people. WE ARE PEOPLE TOO, therefore, he MUST address this problem of racism to the people. The Obama administration, granted waivers to some states from some of the existing rules.
The waivers gave “those states flexibility in how they manage their welfare rolls as long as it produced a 20% increases in the number of people getting work. He actually ENHANCED the states ability to TIGHTEN the initiative to get job training. Essentially he is making it TOUGHER FOR WELFARE RECIPIENTS, in states that feel it should be harder. Since Obama DID what the Republican’s requested and is giving the states more self determination, he is not reducing workfare but letting the states strengthen it in their own manner. IN OTHER WORDS OBAMA IS WORKING WITH THE STATES TO KICK YOU OFF WELFARE, WITH NO JOB CREATION FOR YOU. BOTTOM LINE, HE IS A CLOSET REPUBLICAN WHO DOES ANY AND EVERYTHING THEY WANT.

Getting off welfare is a GOOD thing!
Firstly we the people have been BRAINWASHED to believe that the Government is governing this COUNTRY when it is really the ROBBER BARON COMPANIES…Citizen United validated that fact..The majority of these faux politicians are just mere directors on the board of these robber baron companies. And some of them acts as tough they are indentured servants to some of these robber baron companies. Great article Dr. Watkins. It’s interesting how people mention Clinton and Bush years as if West suddenly came out of hiding once President Obama came into office. I remember West vividly during the Presidential terms of Clinton and Bush. He never back down regardless who was in office. I am waiting for someone, ANYONE, to prove Dr. West wrong.
The Sandy Hook Elementary incident was a tragedy beyond words. I was literally sick to my stomach. I’m glad the conversation of gun violence is finally taking place, however it will amount to nothing. Nothing happened with the previous mass shootings and nothing will happen in the case of 20 babies being gun down in cold blood inside a classroom. That’s reality. These monsters value the existence of a gun over a human life. That’s your basic mentality of blood sucking monsters with money to control weak minded and spineless politicans.
I am sad because I have read far too many articles of Chicago’s b****y summers where 40 – 60 people were shot and many left dead. Most of these individuals were not gang bangers, but incident bystanders, children, all gun down in cold blood. I remember President Obama’s eery silence to the violence in Chicago and it was only briefly mentioned during his campaign one time to garner the African American vote. I found it insulting and unfortunately maybe an indication that deep down he doesn’t care about black babies ducking from bullets in the inner cities of America. News Flash to the rest of America, black people in inner city neighborhoods are NOT immune to burying their children or watching someone being shot. Contrary to what someone believe to be the norm, it is never the norm to see a lifeless body of the one you love in a pool of blood.
While I do believe the President has a meaningful purpose to help all Americans, it becomes disheartening when he dismiss the concerns or questions regarding unemployment in black America as irrelevant race nonsense. His response is usually a patronizing remark, “I am not the President of Black America,” among other things. The responses are always said with a hint of annoyance in his tone and remarks belittling the intelligence of black people. Any person with an ounce of common sense knows he is the President of all of the United States of America. However, he doesn’t respond with the same tone towards gays, Hispanics, Jews, or white men and women who ask questions about their issues.
Read his book, “Dreams of my Father” and you will KNOW he hates black people. He was raised by his white rascist grandparents who likely resented him every step of the way for ruining their white daughter’s life.

I am not now nor have I ever been opposed to criticizing President Obama, what I am opposed to is the same people that are now criticizing the President kept silent when other presidents did or said nothing about crime in the Black communities. We all know what the problems are in the Black communities, and that the President is not the solution, that it’s a parental problem or like thereof. When Obama was in Chicago he helped that community learn to advocate for themselves and how to use the system to get what they needed. The violence has increased exponentially since he left.
It is assumed that the kids killing each other in Chicago are bringing it on themselves with stray bullets killing innocents. It is assumed people on both sides have guns and are shooting at each other.
With all of these killings it is the ADUlTS that need to do whats necessary to stop the killing. The Sandyhook shooters mom should not have given him access to guns,and we have to check our kids rooms for guns and weapons too.
I agree that Tavis ans Dr. West need to be leading those young boys then they can give the man thats concentrating on the economy,ending wars and providing everyone with healthcare their recommendations.
My suggestion confiscate the bullets ,raise the taxes to get them and everyone has to be accountable for their bullets with a bullet check every 90 days.
Maybe I am missing something. Those killed in Sandy Hook were CHILDREN. They were 6 and 7 year olds. Is that the case of those who are dying violently on the streets of Chicago? These CHILDREN were at school not carrying guns and engaged in violence. They were attacked and gun down while attending school. Perhaps I am wrong, but have there been a mass attack on a group of INNOCENT UNARMED children in Chicago? In my humble opinion this comparison has ZERO merit.
As for Tavis and Dr. West. I prefer action over talk. The essence of the problem is Chicago boils down to education or a lack thereof. President Obama has done quite a bit with regard to education or working to improve education in America but specifically education in the black community. If needed I can cite perhaps we are not all aware of these initiatives. So he may not be TALKING about violence in Chicago but he is taking action to solve the problem at it’s core. Violence is nothing new in Chicago. Where were Tavis and Dr. West during the Bush Administration? Now someone who will take this as my being a cheerleader for President Obama please tell me what Dr. West has done to solve this issue outside of talking about it? I am not a blind follower of either. But what are we talking about here? We want President Obama to speak on this topic? I would rather have the action he has taken even before the violence in Chicago and the violence in Sandy Hook to improve the plight of those in poverty (money to HBCU’s, improved health care, executive order to improve black education) Black Americans over someone who has plenty to say on the subject but very little to show in terms of action to solve the problem. Since criticizing is what the issue is here. Let me ask? What has Tavis and Dr. Smiley done to solve the poverty problem in America?
