CBC Chair Says Obama’s Given a Pass Because He’s Black
Last week the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, admitted that African American members of Congress are being lenient on President Obama’s lackluster effort to assist issues that plague the African American community because he is black. Pointing specifically to the surge of unemployment in the African American community, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver said, “If we had a white president we’d be marching around the White House.” He continued to say that if Hillary Clinton sat in the oval office he’d tell her “My sister, I love you, but this has got to go.”
Cleaver continued by saying, “The president knows we are going to act in deference to him in way we wouldn’t to someone white.” Paul Butler, law professor at Georgetown University and author of Let’s Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice, wrote a column in response to Cleaver’s remarks. “This is black solidarity at its most self-defeating,” he said. “It’s why, as the President hands out goodies to other core groups in the Democratic base, African-Americans get squat. On the campaign trial, Obama delivered to Latinos his own version of The DREAM Act, gays received their long-sought presidential endorsement of same-s*x marriage, and union workers get a job-protection intervention directed at China.”
Butler continued to say African Americans have received the short end of the stick under the Obama Administration: “African-Americans, on the other hand, are like Charlie Brown on Halloween,” Butler said. “While everyone else gets candy, they get a rock. Obama’s most emphatic statement on black unemployment was back in 2009, when he said, ‘I can’t pass laws that say I’m just helping black folks. I’m president of the entire United States.’”
Butler offered two lessons that African American constituents can learn from other constituents that President Obama has assisted. “There are two lessons for blacks here, and other groups who feel taken for granted by the administration,” Butler said. “First, leadership has to lead. From day one, the gay establishment did not cut Obama any slack. In contrast, many African-American leaders, from the Black Caucus on down, seem asleep at the wheel.” Continuing with the second lesson, Butler said ”Second, the grassroots has to be demanding. Racial justice is never going to be the president’s priority unless people of color get impatient. There is always going to be something—unrest abroad, a natural disaster, a campaign—that will legitimately demand the president’s attention. The gay community didn’t say,‘Never mind, we’ll wait our turn,‘ and neither should African-Americans.”
Butler criticized the Congressional Black Caucus for failing to represent the needs of the African American community in the White House. “The 43 members of the Black Caucus call themselves the conscience of the Congress,” Butler said. ”But when it comes to forcing Obama’s hand, they seem missing in action. As Cleaver put it, the caucus “is always hesitant to criticize the president.’”

I have supported my president since day one yet I agree I assumed upon voting for him that legislation o support the black community like legislation to support the at community or the Spanish community would have been greater and he has lacked ……it is a huge disappointment and many people are wishing on a whim and hoping for something but nothing was ever promised……:nothing at all
@Andrew, just a couple of questions: 1. What exactly has the President done for the Hispanic Community, 2. What could or should the President do for the Black Community that would be comparable to what he’s done for the Hispanic Community or for the Gay’s?
I’ve been hearing all of this whining and complaining about what the President hasn’t done and how much of a disappointment he is but nobody seems to be able to answer just these two little questions.

Well, for one thing, he’s supported a pathway to citizenship for Latino’s (mostly Mexicans) who are currently here illegally. That is something most racist Republikkkans oppose. Obama’s also created a program where children of illegals can get financial aid and scholarships to get their college education–once again something that the Republikkkans oppose.

(1) No Republican ever owned a slave, uless it was by happenstance of inheritance, and if such happenstance, the slave(s) was promptly set free. The REASON the Republican Party was established was to end slavery.
(2) Virtually all slave owners were democrats.
(3) The KKK was formed by democrats who were mad about losing the Civil War. Their targets were two groups — blacks and Republicans. That’s right, pasty white Republicans got lynched right along with black people. The KKK also organized politically, to run Republicans out of office and replace them with democrats.
(4) Jim Crow laws were passed ONLY in states which were lock-step controlled by democrat politicians.
(5) It was the democrats in the Senate who tried their best to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — it took the Republicans to break the back of the filibuster so that the law could come to a final vote and become law.
(6) It was the democrats (1967 — The Great Society) that came up with WIC, foodstamps, SSI, and other massive “welfare” programs. As you know, these programs decimated the black family by enticing poor black people — which most were — to NOT marry in exchange for free stuff from the government. These same democrats also came up with government housing projects and filled them with black people, and then basically abondoned them there.
I just don’t understand why black people are so in love with the democrat party — it’s the party that has done horrible things to black people for as long as this country has been around.

The man just asked if this guy supported Legislation removing Tax cuts for American Companies that do this exact same thing, and rather than answer the question, his Aides told the man they were “calling the authorities”, and the guy just walked OUT of the meeting. And yes, sometimes a business closes a specific location after 33 years. There is only one Dollar General Store in the nation that is still where it was 33 years ago — their “home” store in Scottsville, KY. And frankly, a lot of companies that were around 33 years ago don’t exist anywhere at all today (they went out of business completely).
Now, Mitt Romney left Bain Capitall over 10 years ago. Blaming Mitt Romney for something that happens at Bain today is crazy. @James A, let me jump in on this. The President could have and should have appointed two blacks to the supreme court. He refused to do so instead he put one white and one hispanic. He gave all that stimulus money to rich white democrats instead of investing that money into black communities in the form of low to no cost loans. He has 23 people in his cabinet and only 3 are black (if that). He gets 95% of the black vote and never comes into the black communities as a lead would/should do instead he goes singing and dancing on these white TV shows. He hurt black employment by passing the amnesty law for illegals. He supported gay marriage despite the majority of black Americans being against it. He said that by now unemployment would be below 6% if the stimulus and the obamacare got passed. He has failed black america and now he is moving onto the hispanics. I agree with your statement in general. I want to speak to the Supreme Court Justices and Cabinet in particular.
First, the thing I find most disturbing is that Obama appointed incompetent idealogues to the court. While I would have been fine with Obama appointing black people to the Court, my desire would have been that, first and foremost, Obama had appointed top-shelf talent (and yes, Obama could have found top-shelf talent that happened to have negroid physical characteristics). Now, just imagine what kind of damage Obama will do to the Supreme Court if given another 4 years? His next appointee will probably be an out-of-closet lesbian (vs. the in-the-closet one he already appointed).
Regarding the cabinet positions, all I can tell you is that George Bush had more black people in his administration than Obama does. Sure, the political philosphy of those black people might have been different than most posters on this baord (i.e., they were Republicans), but still, gotta give George Bush his due.

Who in the black community benefits more from this illegal, blatantly political, so-called “Deferred Action For Child Arrivals”? As many as 80 – 90% of the beneficiaries will be so-called Latinos or Hispanics! You, James A. may be one of those sellouts who is willing to give Obama a grand pass, but there are many of us who were fooled once, but who will not be fooled or abused a second time by a so-called “brother” who has taken us for granted and believes that we must vote for him, considering the alternative. I, for one, will be looking for good House and Senate candidates that are willing to face down this trick “brother” who has not even seen fit to visit the killing fields (or killing streets) of Chicago’s South Side, his supposed former “community organizer” haunts.
As bad as unemployment is for black persons ages 16 – 30, adding 1.3 to 1.8 million additional persons (who are not legally in the country, whose parents will not be punished in exchange for the supposed “innocent children up to age 30″ to get this illegal, non-Congressionally mandated benefit to job hunt roles will further squeeze young blacks out of jobs.
As for creating a housing assistance system to benefit persons who find themselves with “under water” mortgages, “brother Barack” chose to give the funds to the banks so that they could then “trickle it down” to homeowners, many of whom are black inner city residents who are still waiting to hear from those banks. Of course, these are the same bank big shots who contributed to Barack’s 2008 election effort!

In my lifetime I have never heard of black high employment. What do they want President to do open CC camps for them. The manufacturers have been going out of the country for fifteen years or more. And since black men mostly work in manufacturing jobs and women in clerical jobs what, I’m asking, were we thinking? Jobs were leaving the USA, jobs that we worked? Your so right Peter, what is he suppose to do. Make black parents take more resonsibilty for their children education,go to PTA meetings and take part in their childrens education, monitor what the children are watching on television and insure that home work is being done. Is he suppose to insure our children graduate from high shcool and be academically prepared for the next level of education or training.What I’m saying is, are we doing all we can do for ourselves. The job market today requires that we have skills that that qualify us employment. In closing the unemployment rate for college graduates is under 4% and as race we are 14 to 17%. The president can only do so much, I think in his next term we will see more programs to help our people.

I agree that folks ought not be looking for a handout. That said, Obama has totally ignored the black community. Obama’s policies have hurt the “black community” far more than other people groups have been hurt. Unemployment among blacks, especially black males, has syrockted under Obama, while unemployment among whites has incresed at only half the rate of blacks. (Notice: no identifiable people-group is better off under Obama. Bush was bad, Obama is worse.)
How has Obama hurt the black community? Well, amnesty for illegal aliens is a great example. Those illegal aliens tend to compete with “high-school only” and “high school dropout” black people for labor-type jobs, such as janitors and factory work, and entry-level retail jobs, like Walmart. I know those aren’t the greatest jobs on the planet, but they are jobs that a LOT of people would be happy to have right now.
@me112233, we have been in the USA long enough not to be on the bottom of the totem pole. Other blacks with the same amount of racism have pulled themselves up by their non-existing boot straps. If we had tried a little harder and respected our selves, we could do better than cashiers, McDonald’s and other low paying jobs.
Although their is nothing wrong with working at these jobs, but they are low paying and precarious to your health and better living standards.
For sure, employers are going to hire the aliens with their reputation that they will work hard. They are not the type, you know walking around dragging their feet talking about it not my job to do it. If it not your job, we need to get busy and find us a job that is our job.

I understand fully what the black experience is in the United States. I’ve lived through the worst years of oppression after slavery, I’m a graduate of Jim Crow segregation, born and reared in Mississippi. But, I do believe in the concept of self-help.

And while it is true that Obama (as all presidents before him) is the president of all the citizens of the Untied States, Obama has taken time out of his busy golf and fund-raising schedule to do special things for illegal aliens (80% hispanic) and gays. Obama has also seen to it that his one-percenter friends have gotten a nice slice of the government pie ($535,000,000 for Solyndra, for example). Deadbeats who haven’t worked in years also benefitted, as Obama issued an executive order to increase welfare benefits for those already sucking on the government t*t (I suppose this benefitted black people disportionately, but really, the one thing that I don’t want from any president is more free stuff for welfare bums.)
Who have the losers been under Obama? Most anyone that falls into the “working poor” or “middle class” classifications, or put another way, most of us.

Due to President Obama being the first Black president and the racism he encountered for being Black, I can live with giving the first Black president in U.S history a pass for 4 years with an understanding that political decsions were made to win a second term.
In addition as a black man, I don’t want to see the white racist succeed in making the first Black president a one term president, ESPECIALLY after giving White presidents 300 years of doing the same.
Nothing wrong with criticizing President Obama, just make sure you vote after your criticism to keep the racist teabaggers from rescinding all civil right laws, choosing the next two supreme court judges to approve laws to send us back to the plantations as cotton pickers to improve that black employment rate.
We will know the real Obama in the second term. Give him the same opportunity given to those white presidents. We know from history that presidents have the liberty to do whatever they want in there second term because decisions are no longer political.

You hit the nail on the head. What Romney said was certainly inartful, but he was basically correct. Everybody knows that a Republican is wasting his time trying to win certain voter blocks, black people being one of those blocks; so the Republicans focus on getting votes of groups that show a historical willingness to be won over. 95% of blacks voted for Obama last time, despite the fact that a great number of black people do not actually agree with Obama’s political philosphies. I’m thinking Herman Cain was right when he made his now infamous “brainwashed” comment.
Romney could be the best thing that ever happened to the black community (OK, maybe not the best thing, but humor me for a moment) . . . . I believe Romney will create a business environment that will put America back to work, and that is THE thing we need. Obama has proven that he cannot put America back to work; in fact, Obama’s “stimulus” program that was supposed to put us back to work actually made things worse.

When FDR was asked why he did not do something to “help the coloreds” his response was ” A rising tide lifts all boats” referring to government assistance programs during the Depression. The one thing that FRD could have and SHOULD have done something about was pressing for an anti-lynching law, which he failed to do. I don’t feel like the President of CBS speaks for all African Americans. I can’t understand how people put so much faith in a President as if he is a King or God. He is not the President of Black America. Why is there an assumption that he is responsible for giving a voice to everything. I do not agree with all of his policies or decisions but I understand politics. As an African American man, I understand the struggle for equality more than anyone. Yes, African American’s are unemployed but so are other races. What does the President of CBS recommend the President say or do? To suggest that he gets a pass because he is black is crazy! I have never looked at any President and put my life in his hands. Take responsiblity for yourself and do what you have to do. Go back to school and get a degree to put yourself in a better position to be hired. If you don’t like your situation, do something about it. I have to be honest, I voted for Obama because he was African American. As a Black woman, I did not think he was qualifed for the position. I believed then as I believe now, that Hillary Clinton would have made a better president. I only started to really consider him when Bill and Hillary began to act like racist white people because Obama was picking up speed. Otherwise I was not interested in voting for Obama at all. I believe with all of me that the majority of Black folk voted for Obama because he has brown skin. I would feel differently if they were not always defending him without full consideration of his record.

I have to agree with James A’s comment about blacks can’t be “that stupid”, maybe ignorant about how the political system really works. The problem is that “we” (black folk) assume that the Congressional Black Caucus knows how to work the political system when in reality they have demonstrated their ineptitude about “working behind the scenes” in Congress. If issues affecting the black community in critical-mass is a major concern for these CBC members, and they have a “black” president who has the power of the “bully pulpit” to work the American people at the ‘front-end’, then they should coordinate their efforts to address these critical issues affecting the black community. The black members of Congress should be “lobbying” their fellow members for their support in exchange for support of their issues/sponsored legislation. Two objectives meeting in the middle to accomplish a common-goal for equality, prosperity and opportunity. President Obama did help the Black farmer’s get something, so we can’t say he has completely ignored us.
I’m critical of the President and his interaction (or lack thereof) with us and concern for our issues. And because I voted for him in 08 and will be voting for him again in November, I’ll continue to criticize him if I feel there’s something to criticize him on. HOWEVER, I agree with whoever said we have to stop looking at him and people like him to help and just help ourselves.
The government has rarely been interested in helping us do anything and what we’ve known for a long time about a lot of Black politicians (not all but I would say most) is that they are politicians just like all the other politicians. President Obama is afflicted with a racist congress that comes up against ANYTHING he wants to accomplish. He’s also afflicted with a Black population who is so scared of being perceived as Uncle Toms/crabs in a barrel/haterz by others or even themselves that they refuse to be human and treat this president like he’s human and it’s hard for him to do the best job he can under those circumstances.

In the end the best thing for us to do is vote for Obama again (because he is DEFINITELY the better option) and let him do whatever it is he’s going to do or not going to do. The black middle class has been decimated during this recession. We were blamed for the housing market crash. Much was said about our inability to read the fine print on predatory mortgage agreements, but truth be told banks preyed on our desire to own a home, since so much has been said about home ownership and the acquiring of wealth. It would have been an act of courage for the President to have simply spoken about red-lining, high interest mortgages, and how these actions have kept the country segregated. Although the U.S. is a mixture of ethnic groups, the very nature of government is that of a Democratic Republic….meaning “Equal Justice and Protection Under the Law, Constitution protections, etc., etc., only come from competent representation……competent representation from individual of the same heritage, ethnicity……..which is especially the case where much is at stake as it concerns a major monetary court settlement, suing for redress of grievances, etc., etc.

It’s interesting that as soon as the point that Obama has done next to nothing for Black folk as he has for others, and that he should do something specifically for us as he has for other groups is raised, folk erroneously interpret that fact as a demand for him to EXCLUSIVELY look out for Blacks. It reminds me of a story Anne Moody tells in her autobiography “Coming of Age In Mississippi” where the white lady she works for casually asks Anne what she would think of going to the white school. Anne tells her she wouldn’t mind it if all of the white kids were like the white woman’s son and his friends, who were nice to her. Anne explained that she knew all white kids were not nice and that would make it difficult to attend school with them. Her boss got angry. “SO YOU’RE SAYING YOU WANNA GO TO SCHOOL WITH THEM!” and she storms out of the room. She didn’t hear a word the girl said, she just read into it what she wanted to.
That’s what I see so much of in the comment sections of articles about the president. I don’t believe I’ve read one post where anyone has even hinted at the president working for us exclusively. And while there have been posts where people have said outright that they will not vote for him or at all in November, they’re usually pretty straight forward and to the point. You can’t mistake what that person’s point is. But somehow someone who criticizes the president for whatever reason, even though NOWHERE in the post does it say I’M NOT VOTING, some genius inevitably accuses that person of saying just that. Comments about wanting attention by the President of the United States is somehow met with accusations of wanting him to focus ALL of his attention on us, even though no comment has even hinted at such a rediculous idea. LA City Council President’s Son Arrested On Suspicion Of Drunken Driving
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles City Council president’s son was arrested Saturday on suspicion of drunken driving.
Justin Wesson, 30, was stopped around 8:15 p.m. at a DUI checkpoint in Los Angeles.
He was booked and taken to jail, but was released on $5,000 bond.
Herb Wesson said his son, who works as his legislative deputy, was driving his own car when he was stopped.
The council president said he’s grateful no one was injured.
The elder Wesson also said “appropriate action” will be taken within the office.
Justin Wesson is expected to be arraigned Oct. 18.

I voted for Obama because he is black. I will not vote for him again because I do not like many of his policies. I know many blacks will vote for Obama not matter what he does or says.
Even when you factor in racism, we all have the right to make good choices. Educate yourself, don’t have children until YOU can afford to raise them. Have children when you are married, based on the theory that two incomes are better than. Don’t teach your children the victim mentality of ‘the gov’ment owes me’, rich white people owe me, somebody owes me something.
To be sure the government does owe us certain things. A strong military and the maintenance of our infastructure among other things. To raise our children to think, free lunch, free childcare, free housing etc is their right is crippling to our children and to our race.

The New York Times refers to Barack Obama as the last black politician. White journalist asks each other out loud, “What’s going with progression, evolution and rehabilitation in the black community”?
The reply is nothing happening in the black community. There is no movement of progression, evolution and rehabilitation in the black community.
Unless a African American is speaking out loud complaining about the first black president then it is like Christmas Eve in the black community whereas….

White people came go to Africa to help with the black struggle. White people came into the inner city neighborhoods and schools to help teach African American children.
The white people came and built housing to keep African Americans in their communities. The white people came and built banks so that African Americans can save money ………. but the African Americans will have none of it.
Instead of civil rights, schools, Affordable housing, bank loans and libraries African Americans want President Obama to find or create for them a job or opportunity. African Americans want unlimited unemployment extensions and affordable housing only in white areas.
African Americans want banks to make it easy and affordable through no interest charity loans to be able to shop in the white areas and eat in white restaurants.
African Americas protest and keep their children out of African American schools because they want to raise and educate their children alongside white people’s children.
It is not enough that the white people came into the African American inner city neighborhoods and areas bringing with them the avenues of opportunity for African Americans to do for self.
Doing for self means supporting their own black businesses and reading how to books.
African Americans treat reading books like weapons of mass destruction and supporting black business is a waste of time because African Americans don’t read enough to know the infinite benefits of supporting their own enterprises.

The white people came again but this time they showed up with high powered rifles to shoot and kill any black person trying to escape uptown during the Katrina hurricane.

Blacks need to position themselves to be able to “catch hams” Obama throws out the window. As menti oned in others comments much of what he’s done benefits all, including blacks; but to specifically provide blacks a benefit at the exclusion of non-blacks at this time would be committing political suicide. I am surprised to hear this PRESIDENT HAS BEEN GIVEN A PASS ON ANY THING ,BY ANY ONE, … I voted for this President because he’s the best for this job, in 2008, as well as now ,didn’t expect any special treatments from this President or any of the other ones before him, but I vote this year for my dear sister-in law who four years ago was able to get out the vote with me she passed this year from Alzheimer’s but said to me ‘”I never Thought I would live long enough to see this’” ,and my best friend Norman who regardless to how sick he was, ask him the President name he could tell you,he passed from kidney failure , I vote for the two of them this year,I took care of the both of them , so I know how important health insurance is.
