Bishop Eddie Long’s Wife Discusses Calling off Divorce after His S*xual Misconduct Case
Eddie Long’s wife has broken her long silence after two years of not speaking about the allegations that her husband engaged in inappropriate s*xual relations with young men in his ministry.
Vanessa Long spoke at a recent meeting with the ladies of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, sharing that she endured many struggles during her husband’s s*xual misconduct allegations in 2010. Long also spoke about her decision to file for divorce in 2011, a decision she subsequently changed her mind about.
Speaking to the women at the Heart to Heart women’s ministry on Aug. 21, she said,
“I was in the middle of a storm, and I got off the ship.”
When Eddie Long was accused of of s****l misconduct with male minors in September of 2010, Long shared that she struggled with her decision to leave her husband but in the end, she decided to stay with him and her New Birth family and use the experience to minister to others.
Said a tearful Long, who is an elder at New Birth,
“I realized that the best thing I could do was to let you see me as a woman, just like you. A woman capable of making good decisions and a woman capable of making bad decisions. Instead of condemning myself, I can use what happened as an opportunity to minister myself to someone else going through a storm.”
The audience responded by giving her a standing ovation.
After speaking to the Heart to Heart ministry, congregants took to Facebook to support her and commend her for sharing her experience with some calling it “powerful,” “inspiring,” and spiritual.”
A comment from Rhonda Chapman read,
“God is and will always be in control. Some of us will leave the boat during the storm, but it takes a true Virtuous woman to get back on and conquer. Love you…First Lady Long.”
At the beginning of December 2010, Long released a statement saying that she was divorcing her husband, Eddie Long, the senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church located in an Atlanta suburb. Not long after her statement, Long released yet another statement saying she had changed her mind. Even after the second statement, Long went back and forth about whether or not she was leaving her preacher husband.
Two months later, the Longs’ divorce case was “dismissed without prejudice, which meant that she was not pursuing a divorce but still had the right to do so in the future.
Long filed for the divorce after her husband was accused of s*xual misconduct by five different young men from his congregation.
Out of the five young men who accused Eddie Long of s*xual misconduct, four filed lawsuits against him. All four lawsuits were settled out of court privately.
Eddie and Vanessa Long have been married for 23 years and are the parents of three children.

Since this a Black Conservative site, what is the consensus of the audience about the minister’s homosexuality, the Black evangelical movement that condemns homosexuality, and Pastor Long’s wife’s decision to stay with him after the allegations, pay offs, etc.? This is my problem with the fundamentalist church regarding sin. Too many times, homosexuals are used as examples of everything that’s wrong with mankind. But throughout recent history, pastors of large churches have gotten passes for their departures from their teachings. Why is that? Culturally, Black conservatives are just as bigoted as their past oppressors towards a group of citizens. They worry more about what happens in someone else’s bed, than in their own. They disown their own children who are gay and/or different, and they shun some of God’s people because they don’t fall in line with their ideology. Mrs. Long, for whatever reason, cannot counsel families who are dealing with homosexual family issues unless she’s willing to admit that gays exist, aren’t evil, and should just be themselves instead of in hiding. If you want to address homosexuality, you have to take the stigma off of people who are gay.
For the life of me, I will never understand how this woman could stay with her husband after sleeping with “boys”. I’ve been through some really bad times with my husband of 57 years, but rumors have never been said men were involved with his affiairs. When I got married, I said yes when the minister said ” for better OR worse”. Now with times changing, people don’t do this. We all make choices and have options. This would be the time I would take both options/choices and get as far from this man as I could. There isn’t enough money in the world to keep me with this man. There is enough guilt to go around here. I believe Bishop Long misused his position to take advantage of these boys but I also think their parents should have been doing more parenting. I may be wrong but I believe they were more aware of what was going on and that they too should bear some of the blame for these boys being taken advantage of. They were caught up by the money and the gift giving and probably received monetary tokens to turn their heads. Besides there should have been no amount of money that would have kept justice from being served. If this had been my son, first he would never have spent this much time and received the gifts that these boys received from anyone without me being suspicious and taking actions very early on. Secondly, there is no amount of money that would keep me from going after him” in the name of Jesus”. I know that pastors are human but I hold them to at least the same standards as I do anyone who my child is exposed to. As for Mrs. Long, she probably fears being alone ( without a mate) since she has been kept so long. She needs to seek divine guidance and then hold her head up and step out on faith knowing that God will be for her whatever she needs him to be. Some women are afraid of being alone. Again, I would never purposefully allow this to happen to my son and if by chance it did get by me or his dad, the person would have h**l to pay.

Matthew 7:15-16 tells us how to tell if someone is a true of false teacher. Obviously, to do this, we must engage in judging. It is not unchristian to state that someone as a false teacher, if they truly are. 1 John 4:1-2 similarly tells us to test the spirits, to discern the spirits to see which are from God and which are not. Again, this requires some sort of judging on our part. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 10:15, specifically commands his readers to judge for themselves if what he says is right or wrong, truth or error. He writes in Ephesians 5:11 to expose certain actions as being sinful. He further writes in Romans 16:17 to not associate with those members of the church who cause divisions and disruptions within the church. This can only be done by making a judgment.
Even Jesus, who made the statement “judge not, lest you be judged,” praises Peter a few paragraphs later for making a correct judgment (Luke 7:42-43). Later, Jesus praises those who listen to him for their ability to judge others correctly (Luke 12:57). In John 7:24, Jesus actually commands us to judge others; not according to appearance, but with righteous judgment. He further outlines for us in Matthew 18 the steps a church must take in making right judgments on those within the church.
Scripture is full of instructions about the duty we have as Christians to judge others. We are to judge between truth and error, right and wrong. We are to carry out a judging and restoration process when another Christian falls into sin. Scripture is very clear. We must judge. Biblically, the one thing we must not do is not judge.
What then are we to make of Christ’s statement in Luke 6:37 about not judging others? He says, “Judge not, and you shall not be judged.” The world loves to quote this verse. Even Christians love to quote this verse to one another in the name of love and tolerance. But could it be that in light of what the rest of the Bible says, the world, and even many Christians, have a terribly incorrect view of what Christ is actually teaching? This must be the case. Either that, or Jesus contradicts the Bible. We all know that the Bible never contradicts itself, and Jesus, being God, never contradicts the Bible either.

I doubt any of us will really know the truth about what happened apart from those who have made the claims, Long and God but as believers we must learn lessons from this. Even if Eddie Long did nothing wrong, how did he end up in such a vulnerable position that such accusations could be made against him. If everything claimed is true then the church should have disciplined and then restored Long IF willing to sit under counsel. I believe one of the major issues with many American preachers who lead ‘mega’ churches is their celebrity status and the fact that they are accountable to no other human being, it has become like Hollywood and this fashion is sweeping the globe; this is not Biblical and it gives the church a bad name when a pastor is accused yet their is no period where that minister sits under counsel. Even if there was no fault on that person’s part I believe the pastor needs to be ministered to rather carrying on in defiance as if nothing has happened.
There’s so many people on this thread talking about she’s weak, she’s staying with him for the money, etc, etc. The fact is: WE don’t KNOW. I believe in God, and I’m not SURE WHAT I would do if faced with this situation. Based off my character, and the disease factor…chances are, I’m pretty positive I would be a newly single woman. Is she wrong for staying with him? I personally do not think so, because marriage is a God ordained relationship. Is she right for staying with him? I can’t believe some of the comments that I am reading render unto Cesar that which is his the law of the land said that his actions were unlawful and inappropriate. As I see it in alot of black churches we are duped into thinking if we stand up for a wrong than we are judging? Please if anyone else knew of these actions that are just as guilty.When a human has a preference as clearly shown by Bishop Long that does not change. I can respect Mrs. Longs dispossession and her personal reasons on why she decided to stay in a relationship with Eddie Long. However, I personally couldn’t see myself staying in a relationship with a man who is not a only a child molester, spiritual manipulator but also practice homosexuality. There is enough guilt to go around. Where in the world were the parents when he was wining and dining their sons? I have a son and I can tell you for certain that this would have never happened to my child. And then if they didn’t catch it up front how could they accept a pay-off in lieu of his conviction. We have got to do a better job of parenting our children and protecting them as well s defending them. one of my white friends from a 2 parent rich family thougt so much of their male friend, they had their 10 year old son calling him uncle. he was taking the boy on golf outings, etc. the play uncle had the child confused into believing what they were doing was fun for a whole year. it took that long for the boy to tell his parents. the play uncle is in jail for the rest of his life, but their boy is forever scarred. they worry every day about his social adjustment and dating life or lack of it. he’s 21 now.
