Santita Jackson, the daughter of Rev. Jesse Jackson, has called for Joe Biden to apologize for his remarks about black people being in chains.
During a speech in Virginia before a largely African American audience, Biden said that Republicans were going to “put ya’ll back in chains,” referring to reduced banking regulation in the event of a Romney presidency. Some commentators found the comments to be a deeply disturbing reference to slavery as a scare tactic to get African Americans to vote for the Obama/Biden campaign.
“I found these remarks to be profoundly insulting,” said Jackson during her appearance.
Santita says that Biden not only needs to “dial back” his remarks, but he needs to apologize for them. Dr. Boyce Watkins and others have also called for Biden to apologize, while the president has overlooked Biden’s remarks as relatively harmless.
Santita Jackson made her comments during an appearance on “Hannity”on Fox News. Fox is using the remarks to undermine the Obama campaign, and some see any criticism of Biden’s comments as betrayal of President Obama. Jackson is in contrast with Rev. Al Sharpton, a strong Obama ally, initially said the comments were “over the top,” but quickly reversed his position so as not to criticize Biden.
If Biden had been a Republican, would Sharpton and Obama have let him off the hook?
