Dr. Boyce: Politico’s Suspension of Joe Williams was Uncalled For and Probably Racist

Joe Williams a reporter for Politico.com, has been suspended for making comments about presidential candidate Mitt Romney that the company deems to be racially-offensive. During an appearance on the show hosted by Martin Bashir, Williams said this:
“It’s very interesting that he does so many appearances on Fox & Friends. And it’s unscripted. It’s the only time they let Mitt off the leash, so to speak. But it also points out a larger problem he’s got to solve if he wants to be successful come this fall: Romney is very, very comfortable, it seems, with people who are like him. That’s one of the reasons why he seems so stiff and awkward in some town hall settings, why he can’t relate to people other than that. But when he comes on Fox & Friends, they’re like him. They’re white folks who are very much relaxed in their own company.”
Do you hear that? Those are the crickets chirping in the background as I sit and wait for you to give me the punch line that led to Williams being suspended. I can’t find a single offensive word in Williams’ remarks, and the comments are every bit as professional as Williams himself. I’ve interacted with Joe during interviews, and on every single occasion, he was efficient, thorough and thoughtful in his questioning. The idea that he has somehow been labeled to be a rogue is beyond laughable.
But you see, there’s a pattern and unfortunately Joe has been affected by it. For the most part, being born a black man who speaks conscientiously or accurately about issues of race effectively defines you to be a rogue. In fact, that’s why our president hasn’t said the words “black man” or “black woman” in a nationally-televised forum in over three years. There isn’t much of a disconnect between the black man who is stopped and frisked on the street, and the black male professor/journalist/doctor/lawyer who has his capabilities questioned, even when he does nothing wrong.
In media, the pattern is quite the same: Just a couple of years ago, Marc Lamont Hill was ambushed by the Right Wing and fired from Fox News for no good reason. After that, Roland Martin was suspended from CNN for making remarks that I personally didn’t agree with, but were acceptable to many millions of African Americans. The consistent and unfortunate reality for many African Americans who work with mainstream (read: white) media organizations is that you must either be a good little boy or you have to go home. Most of these organizations have little interest in true and meaningful diversity.
The suspensions and slaps on the wrist that black men receive in professional settings can be compared to the way black boys are treated in the school system. I remember coming to school, doing my best, and trying to be a better student, but sometimes finding myself inexplicably punished for doing something that the teacher didn’t like or understand. So, similar to Joe Williams being yanked off the stage at Politico, I would end up sitting in detention or the principal’s office wondering what in the h**l I did wrong. The same can be said for Attorney General Eric Holder, the Yale-educated Attorney General who is being chastised before Congress as if he is an unqualified ambulance-chaser.
Black men on Fox News like Juan Williams are rewarded for speaking negatively about African Americans, but when Juan tried to speak up in favor of the black community during the Republican primaries, he was slapped back into his seat and booed down by the crowd. When it comes to liberal organizations, you are allowed to become fired up and radical about standardized liberal issues, such as gay marriage, reproductive rights, and the torture of detainees at Guantanamo Bay. But the minute you get “too black” and speak truth to power on matters that affect African Americans, they put you back in the mailroom where you belong.
The saddest thing about what happened to Joe Williams is that he is the consummate professional, dedicated to his job and darn good at it. It’s even more unfortunate that he was hit with a massive penalty for making remarks that were not just uneventful, but are also in alignment with millions of other Americans. You want to know why I don’t work for networks like Politico, CNN or MSNBC? It’s because black men are never really free if your platform is a part of a larger plantation.
Independent, black-owned media should be supported. Strong journalists like Joe Williams, in such environments, would be allowed to flourish without fear of intimidation for exercising fair and free speech. We can never have true power if we are always living under an umbrella that is owned by someone else. Malcolm X told us this a long time ago.
Joe Williams wasn’t suspended by Politico for being abusive, unprofessional, sloppy or disrespectful. Instead, he was suspended for expressing opinions that come from a point of view that his supervisors will probably never learn to appreciate. Joe Williams was punished in the same way that many millions of other men like him are penalized for being different from that which the rest of America understands. Joe Williams was suspended for being a black man.

Exactly…where is the punchline which stemmed in his firing? I watched this very episode of Martin Bashir when Joe was one of the contributing commentators, heard precisely what he had said and he hasn’t told nothing but the truth about that so-called GOP presidential candidate. Now I can go on and on about this man, the so-called GOP presidential candidate, and speak negatively myself, but I’m not. It’s like this man’s, Joe William’s, right to speak his mind is being edited to a certain extent and it’s not right. Those people, the anchor folks, on Fox News continuously say a plethora of racist stuff on the sly with nothing of the sort related to a firing is executed. Racism DOES comes in all shapes, forms and fashion today with Fox News being one of the media outlets that allows it; they just can’t exploit it openly like the way they used to do back in the 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and 70′s or else they, “the racists,” will find themselves either dead or there will be so many riots today until law enforcement and the military couldn’t handle. If you are black and a male regardless if you are Dem or Rep they can’t see you as anything but Obama when they look at you because the Repub’s are intimidated by intelligent and educated black men and they are angry because Obama took their club house away and added some color to its interior.
I can relate to this situation as a black professional woman. White people get upset when black women tell the truth as well. It’s an attempt to believe they own us — as if we need their permission at all times to say what we know from our experience and research. They attempt to keep us in “our place” rather than embrace diverse perspectives, and this happens all the time, in many job situations.
Whites in general are uncomfortable with intelligent black people because they can’t predict what you will say, which makes them feel they are not in control or have the upper hand at all times. When they know a black person actually thinks, analyzes and comes to his/her own perspectives without checking with them for approval first, a certain kind of white person seems to react as if a “slave” had escaped from their plantation. They’ll try to make it about you as if you got uppity on them (LOL) or will label you as difficult, when all you’ve done is shared knowledge. Seriously. It can be maddening if one does not find the humor in how these people can be so threatened by black people have different points of view.
Example: I facilitated a training on diversity and the white people in charge got upset with me when I cited research that asserts that racism is a mental disorder. They were mad despite the fact that 95% of my presentation was relatively non-controversial information they could stomach. But I got good evaluations overall from the diverse staff who attended the presentation.

Williams’ own article on Politico (“Obama calls on Congress to Act”) uses “Obama” and “he” nine times. In a CNN video with Jennifer Granholm, Williams refers to Obama as “he” three times. Emails from Michelle Obama refer to him as “he”. The above article and comments use “Obama”, “he” and “him” more than a dozen times. Racism is not dead and will likely not die in our lifetime, but playing the race card has lost it’s power, and it’s time to draw up another play. Blacks spend too much money and have the numbers to control a powerful voting block. We spent $1 Trillion in 2010 while $107.6 Billion of that was spent on Automobiles, Clothes, Electronics Tobacco, Alcohol and Sports & recreation. It would take $19 Billion to pay for college for all the black enrolled college students. We should realize that our Congress is the most powerful branch of the government and we can actually put them in office (in their individual Districts) and demand they work for us or be a one term Congressperson. I am stunned! I too saw the MSNBC segment with Martin Bashir and thought that Joe Williams was quite courageous and factual in his comments. The part of his comment about being “let off the leash” was strong but an appropriate metaphor. Maybe they took it literally and were offended by its implication.

I am not understanding why Williams is entitled to work for POLITICO, or an other private entity. Actually, they do not even have to have a reason other than personal choice. How their decisions impact the revenue stream is the risk they take. In 2010 some 80 million White People voted and some 11 million Black folks voted. Where is the voting pool? I admit that I was more vested in CNN and HLN but, of late, I find that they are just as slanted and biased towards a liberal, pro-gay/immigrant and pro-Obama point of view as Fox News is for their obvious traditional values, anti-immigrant and Pro-Romney point of view.
There is bias on all sides predicated on one’s individual ideology and we want news and information that supports our personal preferences. What I’d like to see is real, objective, “fair and balanced” news media with indepth news coverage that truly informs the populace and does not slant the news based on political affiliation or ideology.
I don’t see that happening anytime soon. So, that is why I watch all of the news networks because I am more liberal on some issues and very conservative on others.
It is time to write legislation that prevents elected officials from making remarks which offend all elected
officials. At the highest level of office, President Obama, regardless of political affiliation deserves
respect. We are back to a sophisticated Jim Crow level and it is frustrating when our own justice system
cannot prevent the onslaught of slander and lies.
If Joe Williams is suspended, why not Chris Matthews, what could be a more blatant difference in treatment.

How can you miss the racist portion of that statement?
Well of course it was racist, he used the term “white folks”, and he implied they were uncomfortable in the “company” of black folks. Thereby he inferred that race matters. It was a generalization however, and he did not specifically denigrate the white race because they (for instance) “got no rythm” or “can’t jump” or “run very fast”, or any other perceived inferiority inherent in caucasion genes.
It was not a criticism of stereotypes. Saying things like “white folks stick together”, is not a derogatory remark, but rather a sad fact. The same would likely apply if you replaced the word “white” with the word “black”.
But if any of that causes any significant bruising of sensitivities, then we’re all surely a whole lot too sensitive?
Conclusion must be something related to mountains and molehills.
