A couple in San Francisco is facing a murder charge for killing the man that they allege was the pimp of their 17-year old daughter. The girl’s father faces life in prison for what happened.
Barry Gilton and his girlfriend Lupe Mercado are accused of tracking the victim and shooting him in the early morning on June 4, according to prosecutors. The victim was Calvin Sneed, a suspected gang banger and pimp. He was shot with a .40-caliber handgun and crashed his car after the accident. He died at the San Francisco General Hospital.
Prosecutors also believe that Gilton and his girlfriend were involved in another plot to kill the man that was unsuccessful. The couple has been dating since they were teenagers and have four children together. Police say that they reacted strongly when they saw their daughter in an escort ad, and believed that she was working for Sneed.
Gilton was also charged with possession of a firearm, which is illegal since he is a felon. He was convicted in 1995 on a drug charge. His girlfriend could get 25 years in prison for her role in the murder.
Attorney Eric Safire, who represents Gilton, has this to say.
“There’s no weapon, and there’s no eyewitness,” Safire said. “What we do know is that the victim is a known gang member, he was out at 2 a.m. in a high crime area — I can only presume he was engaged in his normal and customary (pimping) activities.”
